“Barbie” Collects Over $400 Million in Domestic Box Office, “Meg 2” Gains $3.2 Million in Preview Screening

The sequel to the 2018 film “The Meg”, titled “Meg 2: The Trench” made $3.2 million in Thursday previews and is aiming for a $30 million premiere. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, with a 28% “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences who enjoy watching movies with giant sea monsters and action-packed scenes will likely not be deterred. Produced by Warner Bros., the film cost $129 million to make. “Meg 2” will compete with Nickelodeon and Paramount’s animated movie “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem”, which has already generated $15.1 million and aims to earn $35 million to $45 million during its five-day opening. However, both movies may not be able to outperform “Barbie”, which continues to dominate the box office with a total gross of $406 million in North America. Additionally, Christopher Nolan’s R-rated drama “Oppenheimer” has earned $199.9 million domestically and is expected to cross the $200 million mark soon despite facing competition from “The Meg 2”.
