Dua Lipa and Sean Paul’s Hit Song ‘No Lie’ Reaches 1 Billion Streams on Spotify

On Friday (October 6), Sean Paul’s collaboration with English singer Dua Lipa, titled “No Lie,” exceeded 1 billion plays on Spotify. This achievement not only marks his first billion-play track as a lead artist on the platform, but it also makes him the fifth Jamaican-led song to reach this milestone on Spotify.

In an interview with DancehallMag, Paul expressed his humility towards his career achievement. He stated that he has always looked up to the legends in the genre and learned from them. He expressed his gratitude towards his elders for showing him the way and also towards his fans for their support, which he finds very humbling.

The song Rockabye by Clean Bandit, where he collaborated with Anne-Marie, has reached an impressive 1.4 billion plays on Spotify. Meanwhile, two of his solo hits, Temperature and Get Busy, have garnered 712 million and 449 million plays, respectively.

The popularity of No Lie goes far beyond just Spotify. The music video, which was directed by Tim Nackashi, has achieved over one billion views on YouTube as of April 2022. Additionally, the song has been certified double platinum in the United Kingdom since February of the same year, signifying that it has sold and streamed more than 1,200,000 copies in the country.

Sean Paul’s track “No Lie” holds the record as his lengthiest hit on the UK Singles chart, remaining there for 30 weeks and reaching its highest spot at No. 11. Additionally, this tune reached No. 184 on the Billboard Global 200 chart and landed at No. 113 on the Billboard Global Excl. US chart.

It’s a great feeling to see your songs grow and become more popular over time,” he remarked. “When ‘No Lie’ was initially released, it was already a fantastic track. It received a lot of positive feedback from listeners and gained traction on various streaming platforms. The fact that it continued to gain momentum is truly amazing!”

On October 5, 2023, Sean Paul made an appearance at the Billboard Latin Music Awards in Coral Gables, Florida. He revealed that Dua Lipa, who was not very popular when they recorded their song together, has now achieved the impressive feat of having nine of her tracks hit the streaming milestone.

In a recent interview, Sean Paul spoke highly of Dua Lipa and how kind she was to collaborate on their hit song No Lie. He expressed his pride in working with her before she became a big star, stating that he felt ahead of the curve. No Lie, which was produced by Sermstyle and Phillip Kembo, was featured on Sean Paul’s EP Mad Love The Prequel, released in 2018 through SPJ Productions Ltd in partnership with Island Records. The track was also included on the super deluxe reissue of Dua Lipa’s debut album, titled Dua Lipa: Complete Edition.

According to Paul, No Lie was co-written by him, Emily Warren, and Andrew Jackson. They were looking for a vocalist who could add a special touch to the song when someone in his management team suggested Dua Lipa. Emily recorded a demo of the song, but they were still unsure until they heard Dua’s version, which they knew was perfect. The Mad Love EP, which features collaborations with David Guetta, Becky G, Major Lazer, Migos, and Tory Lanez, has been impressively successful, selling 348,000 units in the U.S. with 621 million streams on various platforms.

Just a few Jamaican-produced tunes have hit the impressive milestone of reaching 1 billion plays on Spotify. OMI’s Cheerleader (Remix) currently holds the record with a whopping 1.5 billion plays. Walshy Fire, a member of DJ group Major Lazer, also joins the exclusive club with three tracks: Lean On with DJ Snake & MØ (2015), Light It Up (Remix) with Brick & Lace’s Nyla and Fuse ODG, and Cold Water with Justin Bieber & MØ (2016). Each of these songs has achieved over 1 billion plays on Spotify.
