This particular moment doesn’t even feature any of the colossal sharks.
Note: Spoilers for Meg 2: The Trench follow. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, proceed with caution!
The latest installment of the Meg franchise is full of action-packed moments, but one scene in particular has audiences scratching their heads. In Meg 2: The Trench, lead character Jonas Taylor swims across the ocean floor without any diving gear. Directed by Ben Wheatley, the movie sees Jonas and his team stumble upon an illegal mining operation while exploring the Mariana Trench. After their ships are grounded by a powerful explosion, they decide to trudge along the ocean floor towards escape pods they spotted earlier. However, not all of them make it, as they encounter terrifying creatures and limited oxygen supplies. When Jess, their navigator, reveals herself to be working with the enemy, she traps the remaining crew members inside a flooding chamber. To save them, Jonas volunteers to swim outside the hatch and round to the doorway, freeing the others. While some viewers have been joking about the scene on social media, others are trying to make sense of it all.
As I read more about the movie, my excitement to watch it grows. According to some comments I came across, Jason Statham has a talent for choosing great action movies that are like junk food – you just can’t get enough of them. One viewer even claimed that Statham is built differently from other actors. Another commenter compared the movie to Sharknado and praised its grandeur and expense. Interestingly, some Redditors pointed out the implausibility of certain scenes in the movie, such as a team member’s death due to a malfunctioning exosuit helmet. They even referenced the tragic OceanGate incident of June 2023 to highlight the difference between real-life and fiction. However, other commenters argued that it’s simply a work of fiction and not meant to be taken too seriously.
